Microbial-induced remediation of Zn2+ pollution based on the capture and utilization of carbon dioxide Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Zhan,Qiwei; Qian,Chunxiang.
Background: Microbial-induced remediation of Zn2+ pollution based on the capture and utilization of carbon dioxide was investigated. In this study, carbon dioxide was absorbed and transformed into carbonate ions under the enzymatic action of Paenibacillus mucilaginosus, which was being utilized to mineralize Zn2+. Results: The compositional and morphological properties of the precipitations were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal properties of the precipitates were investigated by thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). The FTIR results confirmed that the functional groups of the...

Infoteca-e
MENDES, I. de C.; REIS JUNIOR, F. B. dos.
ABSTRACT: Cerrado soils are extremely old, highly weathered and depleted in essential nutrients, especially P. For this reason, the addition of P fertilizers is mandatory in order to obtain economical yields of annual crops. Soil microorganisms play a key role in the P cycle. The P immobilized in the soil microbial biomass acts as reservoir of this element. Soil microorganisms also produce enzymes that act in the P mineralization, participate in the solubilization of inorganic phosphorus and are able to form symbiosis with plants, denominated mycorrizha, enhancing the uptake of this element. In this review we discuss the results of several studies evaluating the use of soil microorganisms to increase P availability in soils, some of the difficulties...

Mild and Moderate Extraction Methods to Assess Potentially Available Soil Organic Nitrogen Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Braos,Bruno Boscov; Ferreira,Manoel Evaristo; Cruz,Mara Cristina Pessôa da; Braos,Lucas Boscov; Barbosa,José Carlos.
ABSTRACT The use of chemical methods to assess the soil organic nitrogen (N) potentially available to plants is not a common practice in Brazil. However, associated with others, this tool might improve efficiency in the use of waste and nitrogen fertilizers. In our study, chemical methods were tested to assess potentially available soil N in samples of 17 representative soils of the western plateau of the state of São Paulo (10 Oxisols and 7 Ultisols). Available soil N was extracted from the collected soil samples using moderate (ISNT-Illinois Soil Nitrogen Test) and mild (hot water and heated solutions of 2 mol L-1 KCl and 0.01 mol L-1 CaCl2) extraction methods. The levels of potentially available N obtained from these chemical methods were correlated...

Delmas, Daniel.
The étang de Berre, near Marseilles (France), is an inland brackish basin with a high primary rate of production. In 1966, the diversion of the Durance River introduced important hydrological changes. A study of organic matter mineralization and ionie exchanges at the water-sediment interface has made it possible to distinguish two areas, according to the composition of organic matter, mineralization mechanism and ionie transfers. In the North, the high rate of mineral sedimentation leads to a low content of organic matter in the sediment. This organic matter of detrital origin is little affected by mineralization; there is, however, high production of ammonium nitrogen, which is released to overlying waters. Nitrates and nitrites undergo denitrification...

Models of relations between bacteria and plankton, and regeneration processes in marine planktonic ecosystem. ArchiMer
Martin, Y; Lelong, P; Cauchi, B.
In order to study bacteria-plankton relationships, experimental and mathematical models were used to stimulate biological processes implicated in plankton ecosystems and to analyze community relationships. The model components are phytoplankton, zooplankton, autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria, ciliates, nutrients, organic matter and phytoplankton antibiotics. This study shows the importance of some factors affecting bacteria communities dynamics and the bacterial activity in mineralization process. Bacterial populations seem to be controlled essentially by the concentration and chemical composition of organic substrates. Antibiosis and predation show a lesser importance on changes in bacteria communities.

Meneses,Abner José Girão; Cândido,Magno José Duarte; Pompeu,Roberto Cláudio Fernandes Franco; Souza,Henrique Antunes de; Guedes,Fernando Lisboa.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the biomass flow of irrigated Pennisetum purpureum cv. Cameroon fertilized with different levels of organic compost made from waste derived from production and slaughter of sheep and goat farming. The experiment was conducted in a cut and carry of elephant grass for four 60 day-cycles. The treatments consisted of levels of organic compost (0; 13.3; 26.6; 39.9; 53.2; 79.8) ton ha-1, besides a mineral treatment with nitrogen and potassium of 720 and 900 kg ha-1 yr-1, respectively. This was a split plot randomized block design with repeated measures over time, in which levels were assigned to plots, and cycles, to subplots. Morphogenetic characteristics of elephant grass were influenced by levels of the compost. Forage production...

Ansenne, A; Compere, P; Goffinet, G.
The mineralized tergite cuticle of four terrestrial isopods (Oniscoidea) (Ligia oceanica, Oniscus asellus, Porcellio scaber and Armadillidium vulgare ) and of the marine isopod Sphaeroma serratum shows a general organization comparable to the fundamental plan of the decapod sclerite cuticle. Moreover, as in decapods, the procuticular layers are not tanned and mineralization rates, from 60 to 80% of the total cuticular dry weight, are of the same importance. However, the chitin protein microfibril distribution according to a homogeneous system in the mineralized procuticular proximal layer in all isopod species so far studied does not allow any comparison of this layer with the non-mineralized membranous layer.

Bouligand, Y.
The crustacean integument is an excellent model for the study of cuticular morphogenesis, at different organization levels. At the supermolecular level, subunits of chitin and protein assemble and show the organization of a stabilized liquid crystal. At higher levels corresponding to cells and cells populations, several controls are involved in the fine architecture of the epicuticle, in the mineral distribution and in characters which concern the whole animal, such as isometric or allometric growth.

Resilience of soil microbial activity and of amino acid dynamics to the removal of plant carbon inputs during winter Scientia Agricola
Avramides,Elizabeth J.; Christou,Matina; Jones,David L..
Many temperate agricultural soils have prolonged periods in the winter when plant carbon inputs to the soil are low. Soil maintained at low temperature in the absence of plants was used to simulate the conditions in a vineyard soil during winter. In a four month simulated overwintering period we showed that the concentration of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen in soil solution slowly declined alongside heterotrophic soil respiration. Measurements of free amino acid concentrations and turnover indicated that the amino acid pool in soil was rapidly depleted but readily replenished throughout the four-month period. This indicates that the soil contained intrinsic reserves of labile C that was capable of supporting the soil microbial community in times of...

Short-term changes and longitudinal distribution of carbon metabolism in the Piauí River estuary (Sergipe, Brazil) BJB
SOUZA,M. F. L. de; COUTO,E. C. G..
Net pelagic metabolism (NPM) and net ecosystem metabolism (NEM) were assessed by sigmaCO2 changes in three sampling stations along Piauí River estuary. At the upper estuary station, sampling was carried out over 48 h. Samples exhibited high DIN:DIP ratios. Chlorophyll-a ranged from 0.2 to 2.5 mug.l-1, being higher at the upper estuarine station than marine ones. Net pelagic metabolic rates ranged from -13.2 to 61.2 mgC.m7-2.d-1. Presence of mucilaginous algal material can explain the net mineralization. In the photic period, NPM ranged from-0.05 to 3.04 mgC.m-2h-1. NEM ranged from -7.77 to 6.65 mgC.m-2.d-1. Bottom ressuspension due to microphytobenthic flotation and a high turbidity plume inside de estuary reflected in negative metabolic rates...

Tissue transglutaminase (TG2) activity regulates osteoblast differentiation and mineralization in the SAOS-2 cell line BJMBR
Yin,Xiaoxue; Chen,Zhongqiang; Liu,Zhongjun; Song,Chunli.
Tissue transglutaminase (type II, TG2) has long been postulated to directly promote skeletal matrix calcification and play an important role in ossification. However, limited information is available on the expression, function and modulating mechanism of TG2 during osteoblast differentiation and mineralization. To address these issues, we cultured the well-established human osteosarcoma cell line SAOS-2 with osteo-inductive conditioned medium and set up three time points (culture days 4, 7, and 14) to represent different stages of SAOS-2 differentiation. Osteoblast markers, mineralization, as well as TG2 expression and activity, were then assayed in each stage. Furthermore, we inhibited TG activity with cystamine and then checked SAOS-2 differentiation...

Vanwambeke, F; Bianchi, M.
Bacterial response to organic (amino acids) or inorganic (NH sub(4) super(+)) nitrogen was studied in 350 liter closed batch systems. The experiments demonstrate an important NH sub(4) super(+) remineralization associated with bacterial growth. The differences between substrate and bacterial C/N ratios and bacterial metabolic demands partly explain the high values of ammonia produced. Grazing by heterotrophic microflagellates resulted in an important release of NH sub(4) super(+). This suggests and important role of grazers for the nitrogen remineralization in natural waters.

USE OF BIOCHAR IN AGRICULTURE Acta biol.Colomb.
SÁNCHEZ-REINOSO,Alefsi David; ÁVILA-PEDRAZA,Edgar Alvaro; RESTREPO-DÍAZ,Hermann.
ABSTRACT The objective of this review is to show how biochar (BC) can be obtained and its effects on the physicochemical properties of soils and physiological behavior of cultivated plants. Biochar is a product rich in carbon that comes from the pyrolysis of biomass, generally of vegetable origin. It is obtained by the decomposition of organic matter exposed to temperatures between 200-900 °C in an atmosphere with low oxygen availability (pyrolysis), which can be slow, intermediate or fast. BC can contain varying levels of elements such as: carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur. The primary sources to produce biochar are the forest, agroindustrial, and manure residues. BC quality and physical-chemical characteristics will depend on the type of...
